Design made simple with free Studrails® design software.

We invite you to download and use our free ST Design software for Windows®-based PCs. ST Design is user friendly, intuitive and excellent for efficient, verifiable output. An informative manual with sample designs is included.

You will discover how easy it is to take advantage of the superiority of Studrails® over stirrups and obtain efficient, punching shear resistant designs.

ST Design 3.0.5 is Now Available!

This is a complete upgrade from STDESIGN V1.3 and contains the following significant changes (as well as many other upgrades):

  • Update to ACI 318-05, which has identical Studrail® design criteria as ACI 318-02.
  • Update to ACI 421.1R-99, which allows the designer to create a more efficient Studrail® design. These provisions are expected to be adopted into ACI 318-08.
  • Update to CSA A23.3-04.
  • Inclusion of the ductility design requirement of IBC 2003.
  • Round columns can now be designed as round columns rather than by using an equivalent square column.
  • We have adopted the gamma-v equations from Figure B2 of ACI 421.1R-99.
  • Openings can be input either in the traditional manner (angles of lines from the column centroid and tangent to the openings) or by specifying the size and location of each opening.
  • Inclusion of basic context-sensitive help.
  • Real-time graphic showing Studrail® design as input fields are entered.

We are currently working on the following additional issues:

  • The graphic showing the Studrail design should position the Studrails® correctly around openings. Currently, the design graphic may show Studrails® through the openings.
  • Section 21.11.5 of ACI 318-05 gives two methods of determining the required Studrails due to the combination of gravity loads and high drift. We currently include the IBC-03 requirements, which are similar to Section 21.11.5b. Should the provisions given in Section 21.11.5a also be included? To use these provisions, the user would be required to provide more input for each connection.
  • We will create a subroutine that will review all of the design output for a given project and consolidate the Studrail® designs to minimize the number of different Studrail® sizes, without creating an increase in cost. There could be substantial labor savings, as well as a reduction in the chance of installation errors, by consolidating the Studrail® sizes.
